OUR ROOTS

Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa RinpocheAmitabha Buddhist Centre (ABC) is a non-profit Buddhist organisation, officially established on 1 January 1989.

We are affiliated to the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), an international organisation with over 150 centres and projects worldwide. Headquartered in the United States, the FPMT follows the Tibetan Buddhist lineage of Lama Tsong Khapa. Founded by Lama Thubten Yeshe and under the guidance of its Spiritual Director, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, the FPMT is devoted to preserving and transmitting the Mahayana Buddhist tradition worldwide through teaching, meditation and community service.

ABC's origins began in 1984 when Lama Yeshe visited Singapore and met several students who were interested in forming a Buddhist group. Lama Yeshe gave our centre its name. Lama Zopa Rinpoche first came to Singapore in 1985. During a retreat in India, Rinpoche developed a very strong and sudden wish to visit Singapore. He saw how the Buddha’s teachings would greatly benefit a growing number of people in Singapore. This overwhelming instinct brought Rinpoche to Singapore for the first time to establish a Buddhist centre, and that was how our close connection with Rinpoche began.
