It is extremely important to remember the advice of the great Kadampa
masters, particularly the advice on what is real Dharma practice and to
understand the differentiation between what is Dharma and what is not
Dharma. In short, anything we do which is an antidote to our negative
emotions - that activity is Dharma.
This is an extremely important advice. You must keep this in mind. As
soon as you consider yourself to be a Dharma practitioner, from that
very moment on, you should always relate the teachings to the state of
your mind and check to see if you are doing anything to defeat your
negative emotions. When you listen to the teachings, you should do it
with the thought, "I am doing this so that I can do something about my
negative emotions."
Every time, before doing anything, be it listening to teachings, doing
your daily commitments, before you give something away, practising
generosity and so forth, you should check your mind all the time to see,
"Whatever I am going to do; is it going to help me? Is it going to
weaken my negative emotions?" You should always check.
