Hospice

To develop different techniques rooted in Dharma for healing, to help others. So in this way, we are making other lives much easier and happier.

– Lama Zopa Rinpoche

Hospice Under the Care of Amitabha Buddha (HUCAB), our hospice volunteer group, reaches out to the terminally ill through the service of befriending patients at Dover Park Hospice. The group was established in 1999 with guidance from ABC’s Spiritual Director, Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

The befrienders devote two or more hours a week to visiting the patients. Following guidelines set by the hospice administration, the volunteers would feed the patients or simply provide companionship during their visits. On Saturdays, there are additional duties such as giving massage or joining the patients in craft-making sessions. For all visits, our volunteers adhere to guidelines set by Dover Park Hospice, which warrants all interactions with the patients to be free of religious involvement.

HUCAB is always on the lookout for more volunteers. Prerequisite volunteer training is required to join HUCAB. This includes learning the basics of palliative care, psychiatry and psychology as necessary preparation for the role of befriender. Those interested in joining as a volunteer can send their enquiries to HUCAB coordinator Chan Choo Lin at choolinchan@gmail.com
